Dryad's Kiss

There once was a mage named Leaf, who studied at the College of Mages in the sea port of Tabat. He had been a simple village boy with a talent for gardening, who was found by a Scout of that College. Within its ivied walls, he learned, and excelled, and when it came time for him to choose between that world and the larger one, he stayed there, content, and became one of its instructors.

He loved learning and pursued it like a drunkard ardently chasing an ale mug. His chamber shelves dripped with books and notes, and whenever new knowledge came to the college, whether in the form of an old map or a bard’s tale, he was there.

In his peerlessness, he had only one flaw. He loved to give advice, on anything and everything, and the less he knew about the matter, the more he spoke.

In time, he came to be known as a great expert on Romance, although he’d kissed neither girl nor boy, preferring the pages of his books. This had been remarked on, for he was a beautiful man, with dark curls and smooth skin on which the shadow of his beard lay like the coming of dusk. But he had no interest in romance, preferring to spend his days reading or pursuing arcane and outlandish experiments, such as how to color a flame purple or most efficiently bargain with an undine.

Still, he would sit in the tavern of an evening and pontificate on the whys and wherefores of women to his comrades, who eagerly accepted his advice.

His counsel, for the most part, was well-intentioned. But one thing he repeated over and over to his audience. “You must begin,” he would pontificate, taking another sip of ale to create a dramatic pause. “As you intend to go on. Decide how you want the relationship to go from the start, and she’ll get used to it. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself wrapped around her finger and dancing to her tune.”

Of course he fell in love.

He went head over heels in the classic manner after glimpsing her in a crowd, a flash of green eyes, a tilted chin, and hair as brown as autumn leaves. He tried to follow her, but she slipped away in Minnow Square, and there he stood, bewildered, scanning the faces in the crowd.

He haunted the Square for a week before he despaired, and took to wandering the streets near it. The Square lies in the southern edge of town, and is inhabited by streets of ancient brick buildings, and of course, the Piskie Wood, where young folk go to hunt a brace of piskies, now and then. The Duke pays a bounty of two coppers a head for the creatures, and it’s a point of pride for many a youth to buy a round in the tavern with their hunt’s profits.

One night he thought he glimpsed her through the black wrought iron fence that surrounds the trees there. He spent the evening hunting her up and down its damp green aisles, listening hard and hearing only the soft hooting of the piskies or the occasional thwip of an arrow and then quick footfalls. At length he came out of the Wood and sat there on a bench by the gate.

It was a misty evening, filled with a fine drizzle, and after he had sat there for an hour or so, beads of water collecting on his cloak, he felt a presence behind him. It was like a cold shadow.

“Come sit, if you’ve a mind to,” he said sullenly. “Or go on standing . either way, I don’t care.”

After a moment, another girl came around the side of the bench. Tall and skinny, she was pale and the chill that came off her white skin told him that she was undead. But she was very beautiful, nonetheless, with eyes like blue ice, and hair like silver waves.

Neither of them spoke, and they sat there another hour, during which no-one passed. Finally a party of late-night hunters came stumbling out of the wood, smelling of spiced brandy, and each bearing a brace or two of piskies at their belts, the little corpses limp as birds.

One of them waved cheerfully as he passed the bench, and then the group was past, sputtering into laughter and quick whispers and then more laughter. Leaf leaned back and sighed.

“Am I not beautiful?” the undead girl said, speaking for the first time. Her voice was cold and slow, like water dripping underground.

“You are, but I am in love with someone else.”

“The brown-haired, green-eyed girl.” She sniffed in contempt.

He shifted his weight forward. “Do you know her?”

She shrugged, a faint motion beneath the dark-webbed silk of her cloak.

He persisted. “Do you know her name?”

She looked at him with eyes like mirrors, moonstones, clouded white with spiritual cataract, and said indifferently, “Her name is Winter’s Ivy, I suppose it best translates to.”

“What language is it in?”

Her lips curled scornfully, and she stood. “I’ll leave you to find that out.” She stared over his shoulder at the black limbs of the wood and said “You’re halfway there, it seems like, already.”

And then she was gone, as though she had never been there.

He went to bed.

In the morning, the cries of the gulls outside his window woke him. He put his head out and scanned the street. Lowering coins in a basket, he received a round of fresh bread in return, its surface ridden with a smear of sharp white soft cheese, and a skin of fresh water. He ate the food on his balcony, watching the street.

In the sporadic sunlight that flickered between the clouds, the memory of the ghost girl thinned and vanished. All he could see in his mind was a line of nut-brown curls.

Looking over his balcony as he chewed at a ferocious bite of bread, he half-choked on it as he spotted those curls outlined against the chilly cobblestones.

He spat out the bread and shouted “Hoy! Hoy!” down at the street. He pointed at her as she and a handful of other people stopped, looking upward.

“Don’t move,” he shouted. “Not until I get down to the street! Please, miss, don’t move.”

He flung on his magister’s robe on his way out the door and scrambled down the stairs to arrive breathless at her feet. Her face had dimples in the pale brown skin as she laughed at him.

“And what is all this about?” she asked.

“Please, madam, if you please, I would ask your name,” he said, trying to draw himself up, ignoring the fact that the words were punctuated with little pants.

She studied him. “My friends call me Ivy,” she said.

“May I count myself among them? My name is Leaf.”

“Very well,” she said. “Are you coming with me to carry packages?”

And he did, an entire morning spent following after her with a basket, filling it with papers of needles and two pots of rouge, and a pair of embroidered gloves.

“May I buy you lunch?” he said when the sound of the Duke’s great clock chiming the noon hour echoed across the city.

She glanced up. “The time!” she said. “Where does it go? I must say goodbye.”

“How will I see you again?” he asked.

She smiled at him. “If it’s meant to be, it will be,” she said. And stepping backward with her basket, she vanished into the crowd, as though swept away by a river’s current, a flash of sleeve and then nothing.

He ate his meal in morose silence in a corner of the tavern. As he pursued a chunk of fish with his spoon, one of his fellows from the College slid into the seat across from him.

“You look gloomy,” he said.

Leaf looked up and shrugged. He did not remember the man’s name, nor did he want company. He stared back down into the murky depths of his stew and felt the other man’s eyes upon him.

“You’re in love!” the nameless man exclaimed in astonishment and, despite himself, Leaf’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

“It’s about time,” the man said. “Now you will be more realistic with what you prescribe for others. .Begin as you intend to go on’, indeed.”

Nettled, Leaf exclaimed, “But it’s true! You must begin as you mean to proceed and not let yourself be wrapped around her finger.”

“Ha, and is that what you’ve been doing?”

“We haven’t gotten that far yet,” Leaf said stiffly. “But when we begin, be assured I’ll let her know who’s calling the tune.”

The other man only laughed.

The zombie girl was perched on his balcony, leaning on the railing. It would have been a more charming sight if she wasn’t in the process of devouring an unwary pigeon. She wiped at her cheeks, feathers tumbling from her cloak and away into the wind at the gesture.

“What is your name?” she said, speaking into the breeze as it wove her hair into silver netting.

“Leaf. And yours?”

“Zuelada. She’ll be no good for you.”

“How do you know?”

“I know her,” she said. She regarded him with her uncanny silver gaze. Overhead clouds scudded across the moon like wisps of torn lace. “I would treat you better, much better. Trust me?”

He couldn’t help himself; he laughed, and one of the cloud shadows moved across her face.

“You don’t understand,” he said. “I am a magister of the College of Mages, and trusting in the word of an unsummoned undead . no matter how beautiful or charming . would be seen as very foolish indeed.”

She smiled. “Beautiful and charming?”

But thoughts of the brown-haired girl kept him from following up the flirtation, and they stood for a handful of minutes in uncomfortable silence.

She sighed and stepped backward and away from him, and was gone again.

He was walking along the street, carrying an armful of books he meant to trade at the bookseller’s, when Ivy slipped her slim hand through his elbow and bobbed at his side, smiling.

“It must be meant to be,” she said mysteriously.

He felt a giddy surge of delight as he smiled back at her.

“It must be,” he said.

All that the ghost girl said on the third occasion was “I’ve told you she’ll be no good for you” before vanishing.

The next morning he followed Ivy into the Piskie Wood, giddy and giggling as any besotted adolescent. She slipped between the trees, and her hair blended with the bark, there in the shadowy silence. Overhead a piskie hooted mournfully. She paused, gazing up a trunk, and held a hand up, signaling him to motionlessness. He stood watching as the small brown humanoid crept down the trunk towards her hand, rubbing its face against her skin like a cat yearning to be petted.

As she stayed still, it emboldened, and insinuated itself along her arm, plucking at the fabric of her sleeve. It grimaced, sniffing the air as it looked at him, and he glimpsed its sharp, ivory teeth only an inch away from the tremor of her neck.

His breath caught at that, and the thing hopped back to the tree.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I startled it.”

She waited, looking up, but the piskie had vanished.

“No matter,” she said. Moonlight touched her hair to silver. She took his hand and tugged at it. “Come this was, where the clearing is.”

They entered the clearing in the center of the wood. Gnarled trees, a medley of oak and thorn and graying apple, surrounded it, along with a thicket of wild roses, a few petals glazed with ice.

She led him to a vacant spot in the line of trees.

“Here,” she said. “I’ve chosen it for you.”

“What do you mean?”

She gazed at him with that faint, enigmatic smile. “Do you love me?”

“More than anything else in the world,” he said.

“Even your College?”

“Of course,” he said, looking at her slender, heart-shaped face.

“Then we might as well begin as we intend to go on,” she said to him as his roots began to spread into the ground and winter’s chill touch fell on his heart. “You’ll get used to it after the initial shock.”

His arms lifted, arching painfully.

“You’ll get used to it with time,” she said. From the edge of the clearing, he could see the zombie girl watching, and he tried to shout out something but could not speak as Ivy wrapped her frosty leaves around him and carried him away into stillness.

Social Media: Pinterest Analytics and Links for 3/18/2013

August 8, 2015 edit: Hey folks, Pinterest has changed their analytics. Here’s the resource I used to update mine: https://help.pinterest.com/en/articles/pinterest-analytics. And for what it’s worth, I realized a lot of you were looking for info and stumbling across this through using them so they’re worth paying attention to!

Pinterest has rolled out Pinterest Analytics. To add it to your site in order to see what’s getting pinned, you need to verify your site. Here’s the instructions for doing so.

Pinterest Analytics

Some notes: even after I’d verified, Analytics wasn’t appearing in the upper right-hand corner as specified. I logged out and back in, and then chose the “Switch to the New Look” option. At that point, I went back and read the instructions and realized Analytics will not work until you have switched over to the new look, which to me seems pretty similar to the old look.

I didn’t see any data on there at first, just the message, “We don’t have any data yet! Please wait for us to calculate it for you,” but I could see the options: Site Metrics, Most Recent, Most Repinned, and Most Clicked, as well as an Export button (always so handy). A day later, the same message was still displaying, but when I drilled down to look at the past seven days, I found I did have some data for the time since I’d validated my website. Pinterest Analytics aren’t semi-real time, the way Google Analytics are. Today’s data is not available until tomorrow.


Site metrics Pinterest will show you, along with my scores for the first few days:

Pins/Pinners:
Pins is the number of times people have pinned from your site, i.e. bookmarked a particular page by pinning an image from it. Pinners is the number of people who have done this. So these are people who are not accessing your site through Pinterest (at least they don’t have to be), but who are using Pinterest to save bookmarks. I a single individual pinned five pages from your site, pins would be five, pinners would be one.

  • Day one: 1 pin from 1 pinner
  • Day two: 0 pins, 0 pinners
  • Day three: 0 pins, 0 pinners
  • Day four: 0 pins, 0 pinners
  • Day five: 5 pins, 3 pinners

Repins/Repinners:
Repins is the number of times your content was repinned, meaning someone saw a page that had already been pinned on Pinterest and decided to save it to one of their boards. Repinners is the number of people who did this. So if someone pinned two pages, and one person repinned both of them, repins would be two while repinners would be one.

  • Day one: 0 repins, 0 repinners
  • Day two: 10 repins, 10 repinners
  • Day three: 2 repins, 2 repinners
  • Day four: 2 repins, 1 repinner
  • Day five: 3 repins, 3 repinners

Impressions/Reach:
Impressions is the number of times your image(s) appeared to someone on Pinterest, either in the main feed or through viewing a board or search results. Reach is the number of people who saw one or more of your image. I’ve bolded day five’s result, which surprised and pleased me.

  • Day one: 247 people saw 474 total images
  • Day two: 324 people saw 1063 total images
  • Day three: 242 people saw 1347 total images
  • Day four: 159 people saw 247 total images
  • Day five: 856 people saw 2957 total images.

Clicks/Visitors:
Clicks is the number of times people clicked on an image and viewed your site. Visitors is the overall number of people who did so.

  • Day one: Three images were clicked on, each time by a different person. As a note of interest, Google Analytics claims only one visitor from Pinterest that day.
  • Day two: Eight images, eight different visitors. (Google Analytics reports 6.)
  • Day three: Twelve images, one visitor. (Google Analytics reports 4.)
  • Day four: Two images, two visitors. (Google Analytics reports 2.)
  • Day five: Three clicks, three visitors. (Google Analytics reports 3 as well.)

Factors that might have affected those numbers:

  • Day three: I re-organized my boards so one with a lot of links pointing back to my site was in the top row. I submitted that board as a StumbleUpon bookmark. And I made one of my boards, fabulous female protagonists, a group board and invited some other people to pin to it.
  • Day four: I was completely absent from Pinterest activity.
  • Day five: I pinned a new piece from my site onto a personal board that collects similar pieces from my site.

The most repinned images are images attached to pieces with interesting content. The most repinned one is also one of the most popular pages on my site, 5 Things to Do in Your First 3 Paragraphs. This emphasizes one of the most important points for anyone working with SEO and web traffic stuff: good content is the most crucial thing.

And it’s also interesting to note the discrepancies between what Pinterest and Google Analytics is reporting, which emphasizes something about this sort of investigation: the numbers may be fuzzier than you think they are.

So why would you want to know any of this? Mainly to know if Pinterest is a successful way to drive traffic. It looks to me, based on this, that it’s quite capable of driving traffic and I really like those (relatively) high Impressions/Figure. Beyond that, it’ll let me know if some images are consistently getting pinned more often (or less often) so I can try to figure out why in order to use that knowledge when employing images in the future.

Why be interested in Pinterest as a social medium overall? Well, the jury’s still out in some ways. But it offers a chance to organize information in a new way. I’ve been planning to write up all my class descriptions on the blog and add them here, for example. There’s also some weird gender stuff going on around popular perceptions of it that someone needs to take apart (imo). Here’s an infographic about who’s using Pinterest.

WordPress is looking to the future and will be doing more content curation. A lot of folks are hosting their blogs on WordPress and may want to look and see what has a chance of affecting them.

Facebook Changes: Facebook’s redesigned their news feeds. What are they and how do they affect reaching readers? Facebook’s also acquired storytelling social network Storylane.

Twitter: A guide to some Twitterspeak, some instances of which I’m not convinced are actually used by anyone.

On the tools side of things, I’ve been messing with Followerwonk. I’ll write that up next week.

Creating an Online Presence for Your Group: Some Basic Steps

Cat Rambo reports for duty!Trying to set up an online presence for your group or organization? Here’s some basics to think about.

One: Include a blog on your website that has new content on a regular basis.

This first step is key to a better social media presence, because it influences your search engine rankings. Better search engine rankings draw more traffic to your site, as do good keywords, and if your blog features information about the group, it’s pretty much guaranteed to have the appropriate keywords.

Establish realistic criteria for “regular”: daily? weekly? biweekly? What can you actually expect to do?

Figure out how you will generate such content. Some suggestions:

  • Group member announcements, interviews, and guest posts.
  • Group events and news.
  • Posts drawing on other social media, such as announcements of new videos on the Youtube channel (see point 4) or Pinterest boards (see point 5).
  • Calls for volunteer positions and interviews with volunteers.
  • Yearly best-of lists or review columns.

This blog should drive the group’s presence on social networks. Posts should automatically propagate to other networks, thereby relieving the pressure for someone to be managing and posting to individual streams, such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as presenting a more unified and consistent approach.


Two: Keep your Facebook policy simple and free.

Social networks rise and fall, but currently Facebook’s attempts to monetize itself by making you pay for messages or pay extra to reach people is making it less useful to those of us who want the most bang for the buck. Simply put, recent changes make is so not everyone who’s liked your page or followed you is seeing your posts.

Basically all you need is a public Facebook fan page to which blog posts (generated in point 1) are automatically posted and which people can “like” in order to receive news of the organization via that social network. Here’s a sample of my writerly FB fan page and one I did for a recent book. (Feel free to “like” them!)

Three: Use Google+.

As Facebook’s popularity falls, Google+’s is rising, particularly internationally. There’s space to be innovative here. Set up an open community. Certainly blog posts should get propagated to here, but make the most of Google+ technology and encourage people to use Hangouts, share documents, etc.

Four: Use Youtube.

Users like more than just text, and video is one way to get more interest, if your group is one likely to generate videos of events, gatherings, speeches, etc. Each time a video is put up, there should be a blog post with a link and brief description, thereby generating blog content.

Five: Use Pinterest.

Use Pinterest as a way to access content visually while building brand name. For example, I recently put together a board that features all the posts in a particular year’s of Aqueduct Press’s reading list series.

Six: Make it easy for your group members to connect.

Make social media information, such as Twitter or Facebook handles, available to users. Provide directories of alumni on the various networks. For example, someone joining Twitter might find a list of all group members currently on Twitter useful. Here’s my list of Codex members on Twitter.

Seven: Make it easy for your group members to create community.

Provide a way people can upload announcements to the blog for a moderator to check and post on a daily or weekly basis. Encourage people to reply to each other’s posts and pass them along on social networks by noticing and rewarding community efforts as well as by leading by example and being an active and responsive community member.

Eight: You don’t need forums or mailings.

Creating a log-in for a forum or subscribing to a newsletter is one way for people to reach you, but social media has the advantage of reaching out to new as well as established community members. It’s as easy — in some cases easier — for someone to check your group’s Facebook page as it is to log into a forum. Physical mailings are costly; e-mail lists need to be maintained.

Nine: Use the community.

Your members include people who are invested in the organization and are also social influencers. The organization should be making the most of this. Here’s some possible ways to do so.

  • Create social media posts that include calls to action, asking people to pass along information.
  • Generate guest posts for the blog from the community by calling for volunteers to write them.
  • Generate Youtube videos and Pinterest boards via the community by issuing calls to collect images or videos for a specific event or contest.

Ten: No matter what, have a succinct and coherent plan.

Figure out what the social media mission is (perhaps increase membership and establish brand). Establish (again, realistic is important) criteria for success in the various social media, such as number of website hits via Facebook each month, number of Twitter followers, etc. Check the success rate on at least yearly basis, perhaps better every six months or even three, given how fast social media can change.

Give things a unified feel. The background on the group’s Twitter page should be the same one used on Facebook or on the blog. Use the same font where possible.

Have someone who’s in charge of all this, rather than trying to do it by committee. Having someone oversee things makes sure that gaps don’t get missed.
